MELT's second meeting was held at Culver's on February 15, 2017.
The agenda included discussing MELT's mission and goals, relaying accomplishments since our last meeting, and discussing volunteer opportunities in our community to help meet the needs of the people around us and to get to know our neighbors who have different backgrounds and beliefs.
Among the voluntering ideas discussed were: helping with packaging "Food for Kids;" volunteering at Greenvale Park Community School; helping immigrants with learning conversational English; becoming civics tutors for naturalization tests; and having a promotional booth for MELT at community events where we could discover meaningful ways to help people in our area while spreading MELT's message.
A significant part of the engaging conversation was devoted to attending to the needs of the Latino population in our community. Many specific needs were addressed and it became evident that the most pressing concern is the fear of ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) showing up in Northfield and deporting family members. It was determined that MELT would initiate communication with representatives of the Latino community to find out how our members can help address their concerns.
